Speed Dating in the Classroom
After all, they are trying to talk in a language they are still working on learning. Still, silence can be deadly in the ESL classroom for your students and you. When you want to get your students to speak up, try one of these fun and simple games to get them talking in class. All you need is one standard die and six questions — either ice breakers or ones that elicit opinions, experience or other personal thoughts.
Give students a list of the questions , and make sure they are numbered on the paper.
Feb 21, · I want to start the education part of my blog with one of my very favorite teaching strategies. (I have found it especially effective with 9th graders). The strategy is called “speed dating.” Here is a break down: Give students various questions (about ) to ponder and write about on a particular topic. (This can be.
Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian.
Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.
Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going. If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart. That is why I advise our boys to read stories and watch movies more and to learn more beautiful phrases to tell girls.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students.
Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc. They really enjoyed this lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.
So here is what I did: Decide how you want the tables set up. I had 9 tables with 4 chairs at each table.
‘Speed Dating’ – an activity to work on introductions/hobbies etc!
It is based on the idea of cooperative learning, and is designed to allow each student an equal amount of time to share their ideas. This is a great activity for the start of the school year, to get students to share personal information. I often also use it after a school holiday or at the end of the school year so that they can talk about their holidays, although it will work for any topic you need to cover in the course where the students need to give their personal vew.
Pre-intermediate — Advanced Have the students prepare a topic to talk about for two minutes. Once they have prepared their ideas, place them in pairs.

The end of the year is here! Now, I always vacillate between being terribly sad the year is over and being so excited for a fresh start come August. It was always a challenge.

Posted on October 7, by librariantiff One of the most powerful things I can do for my students is work to promote reading for fun and helping students find books that they will enjoy. I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables. It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own.
I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes. For the first 30 seconds, they can peruse the books in the box at their table and select a book. Then, they spend 4 minutes reading the book to see if it hooks them. With 30 seconds remaining, they make note of the title of the book and give it a ranking. If at any time they find a book they want to check out, they can hold on to that book.
All other books go back in the box, we rotate the boxes, and repeat this activity times. I always get great feedback from teachers and students with this activity…they love it! By the final round, about half of the students will typically have a book that they want to check out.

Speed Dating Rules By: Kay Ireland Speed dating may sound silly to some, but in fact, it can be a successful way to meet new people and garner prospective dates. Discovery Health reports that over half of all participants find a potential match through speed dating see Reference section. If a venue near you is offering speed dating, consider it with an open mind and an understanding of the speed-dating rules. The pace in speed dating still gives you time for a nice connection.
One of the issues that I try to address in the classroom is to have each student talking with the other students about their academic work. If you have students in groups, some will dominate and some will play wall flower. With speed learning, students are challenged to have several one on one conversations with the other students. I communicate a defined outcome as well as a time limit to help focus the discussions.
Steps for using the method in class: Use speed learning in cases where each student has something unique to share, it could be workshopping their project ideas or sharing a news article they were asked to being in. Students arrange themselves so that each person is sitting across from one other person. Place a visible countdown timer so that students are able to manage their time well. Use a graphic organizer to focus the listener and facilitate active participation. Example from History of Anything project Have the students switch times depending on the desired outcome of the activity.
In my experience, less than three is not enough, more than 5 and the students start to tire of the activity. Provide time for the students to process the questions they heard and the feedback they received. Outcomes of such an activity include: While it is a loud activity with a ton of movement, I consider those all bonus moments for a dynamic learning environment.

New information needed to be introduced with parent and daughter isotopes. Once students are in their groups, with supplies, and general directions are given, they are on their own for doing their runs. They will do this 8 times. Once they are finished with their 8 runs, they will record their data on the class data table which can be on the board. Once all groups data is on the table, you can calculate the average for each run and determine a class average.
