Heading Sensors To set and hold a course, your autopilot needs to know your current heading. The Simrad FC40 Fluxgate Compass is compatible with our full range of recreational autopilot solutions. For the best autopilot performance, we recommend the Simrad RC42 Rate Compass which includes a solid-state rate sensor, which directly measures rate of turn. This provides greater precision than a compass alone. Remotes Our autopilot remotes can be combined with a multifunction display at the helm to add traditional hands-on steering control, or mounted elsewhere aboard your vessel to provide autopilot heading control from a flybridge or other convenient location. Should you gun the boat all the way the bow up attitude will have the retainer ring well above the hook and when it all falls heavily as power is removed, the result will be damage to the hull or catch assembly.

Zucchini Bread Charging Your Boat Batteries Battery and charger technology alike have made some incredible advances since those days a long time ago when I worked in a gas station and filled new car batteries with fresh sulfuric acid before charging them on a linear trickle charger Today is a different story; batteries designed for cars are one thing — those designed for boats are a totally different story.

Each of today’s boat batteries has a different purpose, and each has various advantages and disadvantages For more information, check my article on Boat Batteries: What You Need To Know. Making the right choice when buying a new battery will eliminate many worries when you are on the water so you can concentrate on the most important reason you bought your boat in the first place: But what about after you get off the water?

Thank Neptune the winter is over. But where to begin? Should I even attempt this? Will it end up costing me a lot more money? All very good questions and due to the many styles of propulsion and vessel systems, you should read up using your specific owners or service manual. This will be your first step. My boat used to reside in my garage but two years ago it sadly had to go outside to make room. Instead I have to perfectly align the hitch directly below the receiver each and every time. Installing a Solar Panel to Maintain Batteries By Don Casey A dead battery is an all-too-common occurrence in a boat that sits idle most work weeks, and when it happens it nearly always spoils a planned day or weekend on the water. This unhappy circumstance can be avoided with the installation of a small solar panel. As an added benefit, absolutely nothing prolongs the life of a battery like keeping it fully charged. A battery charger can do the job for a boat on a trailer or at a dock, but there are risks to leaving an unattended boat plugged in.

A solar panel avoids these. If your boat is on a mooring, a solar panel is the only practical choice for maintaining batteries at full charge.

Battery Switches Battery Switches Battery disconnect switches help manage the overall use of electrical power on board. They are used to connect or disconnect electrical devices from the electrical system. They help to prevent battery drain during periods of inactivity. They allow for a quick and easy way to shut down the entire electrical system in an emergency. An optional key lock helps to prevent unauthorized use of the vessel.

In addition to doing everything a battery disconnect switch does, battery selector switches permit battery selection of two or more batteries for specific purposes including starting engines, running accessories or even recharging. They allow for the use of one or more batteries in systems with one or more engines and facilitate putting batteries in parallel for emergency starting when one or both batteries are substantially discharged.

All Perko battery disconnect switches and battery selector switches are UL listed, ignition protected and CE approved. This means they have been tested and certified by a respected outside agency, are designed to be used safely in a bilge where explosive fumes may be present and meet all the requirements for use and sale throughout the world.

Perko battery switches are designed for surface mounting.

I have three posts, two small posts and one large post on my starter solenoid… Typically, GM vehicles prior to have starter solenoids with three posts: Battery — This is the large post on the solenoid which is usually found on the center top of the solenoid. This is the post where the positive battery cable attaches along with any battery feed wires that the car might require. These wires are usually heavy gauge red, or black wires and may contain a fusible link.

This post becomes hot only while the starter is cranking.

An automatic smart switch is a nice addition to any dual battery boat wiring – and a must have for trolling systems. Simply, the VSR connects between the two position battery posts through the battery switch.

Are the Rule bilge Pumps self priming? Bilge pumps are not Self Priming Can the hose run horizontally? Increases in hose size will not increase output Does reversing polarity decrease pump capacity? Increase wire gauge for each additional 20 foot run Can I install a check valve on the pump discharge? Check valves are not recommended How do I prevent water from siphoning back? Install a vented loop for anti-siphoning Do the pumps have a break-in period? Break in for 10 hours for maximum pumping Does Rule repair the pumps?

Rule does not repair pumps – it is not cost efficient for the consumer Can I get parts for Rule Pumps? Rule does not sell pump parts due to liability Why doesn’t Rule Pumps want check valve on the pump’s discharge? They’re notorious for failing in both the open and the closed position, which respectively leads to flooding or failure to pump. If the valve is close to the pump, the pump may not be able to overcome the weight of the water on the other side of the valve, rendering the pump ineffective.

Why does my automatic Rule Pumps turns off if I install a check valve on the discharge of the pump? The automatic bilge pump turns on about every two and a half minutes to “check” for high water. If water causes resistance on the pump, it continues to pump until the resistance lowers.

Some of the biggest striped bass in the world are caught in Maryland in the early spring. I came away with some interesting information. According to extension agents working with Florida Sea Grant, circle hooks have been used by commercial fishermen for decades due to their ability to efficiently catch fish. The principle behind the hook is simple. After the hook has been swallowed the fisherman applies pressure to the line, pulling the hook out of the stomach.

The actual curved shape of the hook is intended to keep the hook from catching in the gut cavity or throat.

The Drotto boat latch is designed to mount on your trailer using your existing brackets and replacing only your existing bow roller. When the bow eye on the front of your boat comes in contact with the latch, the latch automatically grabs onto the bow eye of your boat and automatically locks it in place.

Here is a step-by-step guide to attaching a boat trailer to your car so you can reach your destination without stress. Chock the wheels Place a brick, block of wood or wheel chock behind each of the back tyres on the boat trailer to keep it from rolling backwards, or in front to stop it rolling forward. They can help guide the tow vehicle into the right position for attachment. Reverse your car Slowly back up the car until the towball is closely aligned with the boat trailer coupling.

This may require more than one attempt, so patience is a virtue! Lower the coupling on to the towball Open the latch on the trailer coupling, pull back the coupling handle and lower it on to the towball. Have your friend verify that all the trailer lights are working and that the brake lights are in sync with the car. Make sure your boat is secure Check that the boat is securely attached and will not come loose if you have to hit the brakes abruptly.
